This course has an assignment that is due by 11:55 pm Central Standard Time on Wednesday night of the first week of class. Failure to complete this assignment will result in your removal from the course for non-participation.

A survey from settlement to the end of Reconstruction (1877). Topics include basic institutions (family, religion, education, politics and economics); the causes of the American Revolution; democratization; the U.S. Constitution; development of political parties; the causes of the Civil War; and the changing status of African-Americans.  Fulfills the state civics requirement.

This course is meant to promote critical understanding of historical facts to achieve five objectives:

1. To introduce the student to concepts and technology associated with the US. (MoSPE 1C1)
2. To explore the personalities, events, and locations important to American society. (MoSPE 1C1)
3. To acquaint the student with political parties and voting outcomes (MoSPE 1C1)
4. To familiarize the student with important U.S. historical facts and chronology. (MoSPE 1C1)
5. To aid in completing state civics requirements for graduation (including constitutional studies).
