Course Description

HI103 Introduction to Missouri Civics. 1 hour. An introduction to the Missouri Constitution, state political institutions, and processes. This course will fulfill the Missouri State Civics requirement for transfer students who have completed coursework from a non-Missouri institution in American Government or a survey of American History I or an equivalent course which covers the U.S. Constitution. Cross-listed with PS103. Prerequisite: American Government or American History I at an out-of-state institution.

 

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  1. Understand the meaning of civics and the role of citizenship participation in Missouri government.
  2. Explain models of civic participation. 
  3. Describe key characteristics and philosophical foundations for the U.S. and Missouri Constitutions. 
  4. Explain the complexity of Missouri’s constitution and political institutions, including voting procedures and the role of political parties.
  5. Understand Missouri’s role in state and national civil rights history.
