This course has an assignment that is due by 11:55 pm Central Standard Time on Wednesday night of the first week of class.  Failure to complete this assignment will result in your removal from the course for non-participation. 

Course Special Requirements

You will need either a set of external speakers and a standalone microphone, or a headset that includes a built‐in microphone.  A broadband or high‐speed Internet connection (e.g. Cable, DSL, T1, LAN) is required to avoid problems downloading video and audio files and to enable the student voice recording activities.

Textbooks

Mitchell, J. & Tano, C. Portails. (2017). Publisher: Vista Higher Learning. 

For this course, students will need the textbook for the course, and access to the Vista Higher Learning (VHL) Supersite. 

Students have the option of purchasing the Supersite access bundled with either a loose-leaf version of the textbook or a Vtext (electronic) version of the textbook.

This course will be a mix between using the MyCMU platform and the VHL website.  Foreign language instruction requires a lot of interactive functionality that is available on the VHLCentral.com website.

Course Description

(4 hours) This is an introduction to current French, including oral practice, listening and reading comprehension, and the grammar necessary for spoken and written expression. There is also an introduction to French culture. No prior French required.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  • Understand and apply grammar rules covered in the course
  • Read and understand basic passages in French
  • Write short compositions and use vocabulary from the course
  • Listen and comprehend basic conversations of native speakers
  • Communicate in French at a basic level, and be able to answer basic questions
  • Show knowledge of the cultural aspects of the French and Francophone cultures, as outlined in the course
