Course Description

3 hours. This is a study of British poetry, prose, and drama up to 1790. Prerequisites: EN120 (or EN110/111) and any 200-level English literature class.

 

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, students should

  • be familiar with the major British literary works and authors from the late 18th century through the 21st century;
  • better understand literary theory and how it can be applied in literary study, including cultural studies, gender/sexuality studies, performance studies, and other theoretical approaches;
  • engage Romantic, Victorian, Modern, and Post-Modern texts critically and affectively and become familiar with their literary/generic conventions and innovations;
  • understand how to situate the study of a literary work within its historical and cultural contexts and demonstrate an ability to discuss the literature within/between those contexts;
  • identify and discuss trans-historical connections among 19th, 20th, and 21st, and modern cultural concerns;
  • continue to develop and practice critical-analytical writing skills through a semester-long research/writing project.
