Course Description

3 hours. A project-based course in which students study the relationship between contemporary learning theories and classroom technology. Coursework encourages development of technology skills and a conceptual foundation that supports (a) continued life­long professional development, (b) potential technological leadership among peers and (c) new instructional technology perspectives.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, each student will be able to:

  • Create a Personal Learning Network that is content specific.
  • Synthesize how to use the Internet and social media to gather relevant information on current and emerging instructional technology.
  • Develop and reflect upon one’s lesson plans that incorporate contemporary learning theories, current classroom technologies and consider the integration of associated standards as set by the individual’s professional connections, including, but not limited to: Common Core, GLEs, ISTI standards, ACTFL standards, amongst others.
  • Evaluate communication options for the 21st century teacher and learner and rate said communication tools based on one’s own perceived level of importance.
  • Utilize old assessments and incorporate modern approaches to enhance learning as well as the integration of reflective practices provided by going digital while assessing.
  • Compare and contrast digital citizenship with citizenship and be able to explain and teach others about the differences and similarities.
  • The accumulation and curation of digital media and resources.
  • Solve education gaps via the use of technology and evaluate its effectiveness.
  • Identify and analyze new ways of thinking due to the integration of technology in and outside of the classroom.
  • Predict future learning possibility based on current understanding and evaluation of what works and what does not in the classroom.

Course Outcomes

The following outcomes are expected of each student for this course:

  • Through completion of written homework assignments, be able to create learning experiences that are for a particular discipline; are meaningful; and support intellectual, social, and personal development for students.
  • Through classroom lectures and student participation, be able to identify and develop instructional strategies to address the needs of diverse learners through utilization of technology.
  • Through a combination of reading assignments, homework, classroom lectures, and researching Internet links, be able to identify, create, and plan using technology to support student development in critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
  • Through development of the Team and individual student project, be able to create a unit plan that fosters positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, communication strategies, as well as reaching all learners.
  • Through a combination of networking, classroom lectures, and homework, be able to utilize technology to be a more effective teacher.
  • Through a combination of reading assignments and classroom lectures, be able to design formal and informal assessment to ensure that student development is continuous and in alignment with instructional goals using technology to gain this information at a much faster rate.
  • Through work with a team of other students (teachers hopefully), be able to analyze the effectiveness of his or her teaching and actions on students when integrating technology, and determine the tools to improve it.
  • Through various assignments and class participation, be able to identify technology that will enhance and support student learning.
  • Through the development of an individual and a Learning Team project, be able to research, develop, and share with other teachers a variety of technological strategies to improve the teaching environment.
