All genres of literature for children and adolescents are surveyed through synopses and reading of books by outstanding authors to acquaint the student with high quality stories and poems for use with children and adolescents. Multicultural literature is emphasized and methods of using literature in the classroom as well as techniques of storytelling are also studied. Extensive reading and active participation in online class discussions are essential for this course. This course includes a minimal amount of clinical experiences. Prerequisites: ED103.

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

• Create learning experiences with literature that are meaningful to the learner, incorporating prior knowledge.
• Utilize stories and poetry as tools for the social, intellectual and emotional development of the diverse learner.
• Share stories and poetry constructively, building communication skills necessary within and beyond the classroom.
• Use literature as a critical thinking tool for reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as other communicative arts – movement, music, drama and art.
• Explore genres of literature and plan methods for utilizing reading in the content areas for supporting concepts and developing an awareness of a global society to support families in building community.
• Experience inquiry, choice and decision making while exploring all genres and discovering authors and researching topics and selecting quality literature. 
• Read, discuss and apply theory, research and practice from professional literature to knowledge of teaching. 
• Identify elements of children’s literature critical for quality literature.
• Reflect using art, writing, movement and drama to organize thoughts and ideas and share new knowledge both personally and professionally.
• Use the creative arts for expressing critical elements of the story. 
• Compile an anthology of selected poems for children.
