This course makes use of the tools of microeconomics to analyze law and the legal system. The economic analysis of the law, although a fairly new field of study, has had an important impact on legal scholarship, and is now an integral part of legal education in many of the most distinguished law schools in the country. While this course is of obvious use to those students planning to attend law school, it deals with a subject that should be of interest to all college students. After a general introduction to the field of Law & Economics and a brief review of microeconomic theory, we will take an initial look at law and the legal system. We will then examine a series of legal topics from the perspective of economics: property, contracts, torts, and crime and criminal law.
