Course Description

Students study written and oral communication used in for-profit, non-profit, and governmental organizations. Topics include the writing of memoranda, proposals, reports, speeches, resumes, cover letters, and grants. Students improve their writing, speaking, leadership, team-building, and interviewing skills through discussion, assignments, and external class projects. Prerequisite: EN120 (or EN110/EN111)

Course Objectives

The goal of the course is to introduce the student to the study of business communication. After the course, the student should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate polished grammar, punctuation, and usage skills necessary to create, proofread, and edit typical written business messages and oral presentations.
  2. Prepare clear, concise, and well-organized e-mails, memos, letters, and reports.
  3. Implement problem-solving and critical-thinking skills in preparing business messages and presentations.
  4. Demonstrate professionalism while developing effective listening, nonverbal, meeting, team, and cross-cultural skills.
  5. Gain hands-on experience in the use of digital tools for researching, reporting, composing, and interacting on the job.
  6. Create customized, professional resumes, cover letters, and other employment messages.
  7. Demonstrate superior interviewing techniques when applying for employment.
