Course Description

CT325 Advanced Public Speaking. 3 hours. Students study the theory of speech communication to further develop their skills in researching, writing, and presenting speeches in public-speaking situations. Topics include the types of speeches, methods of delivery, persuasive theory, persuasive techniques, rhetorical criticism, political speeches, and interviewing skills. Students present individual informative, persuasive, and special-occasion speeches as well as group presentations. Prerequisite: CT101.

Course Special Requirements

You will video your speeches and post them to YouTube. In order to do this, you must have access to a device that can capture video. Please be aware of quality when you are taping, viewers must be able to see and hear the speaker.

When you tape your speeches, you must have an audience of at least five (5) people. At the beginning and end of your speech, you will pan the audience to show those in attendance.

Course Objectives

A. Deliver speeches using appropriate and effective vocal and physical behaviors to enhance messages such as vocal variety, articulation, and movement.
B. Research and evaluate supporting materials used in speeches.
C. Listen critically to speeches in order to critique in class and outside class speeches.
D. Gain experience in researching, outlining, writing, and presenting speeches.
E. Learn and use presentation aids including programs such as PowerPoint.
