  1. Students will be exposed to the history, philosophy, and trends in marriage, couple, and family counseling. (MCFCF A.1.)
  2. Students will understand the ethical & legal considerations specifically related to the practice of marriage, couple, and family counseling. (MCFCF A.2.)
  3. Students will understand the understand theories of couple and family resilience. (core, G.3.d.)
  4. Students will be oriented to wellness and prevention as desired counseling goals. (core, G.5.a.)
  5. Students will promote optimal human development, wellness, and mental health through prevention, education, and advocacy activities (such as premarital counseling, parenting skills training, and relationship enhancement). (CMHC D.3. & MHFCF D.1.))
  6. Student will understands family development and life cycle, sociology of the family, family phenomenology, contemporary families, family wellness, families and culture, families and family issues, family violence, and theories of marriage couples, and family counseling. (MHFCF A.6.)
  7. Students will understand marriage, couple, & family counseling theories that provide the student with models to conceptualize client presentation and that help the student select appropriate counseling interventions. Students will be exposed to models of counseling that are consistent with current professional research and practice in the field so they begin to develop a personal model of counseling (core, G.5.d.)
  8. Students will understand various models and approaches to the clinic evaluation and their appropriate uses, including diagnostic interviews, mental status examinations, symptom inventories, and psychoeducational and personality assessments as are related to marriage, couple, and family issues. (CMHC, G.2.)
  9. Students will understands issues of marriage, couple, and family life-cycle dynamics; healthy family functioning; family structures; and family of origin and intergenerational influences in a multicultural society. (MHFCF C.1)
  10. Students will understand how living in a multicultural society affects couples and families (MHFCF E.1.)
  11. Students will recognize societal trends and treatment issues related to working with multicultural and diverse family systems (e.g., families in transition, dual-career couples, blended families, same-sex couples). (MHFCF E.2.)
  12. Students will understand current literature that outlines theories, approaches, strategies, and techniques shown to be effective in working with diverse family systems. (MHFCF E.3.)
  13. Students will maintains information regarding community resources to make appropriate referrals. (MHFCF F.2.)
  14. Students will know knows principles and models of assessment and case conceptualization from a systems perspective, including diagnostic interviews, mental diagnostic status examinations, symptoms inventories, and psychoeducational and personality assessments. (MHFCF G.1.)

    15   Students will understand marriage, couple, and family assessment tools and techniques appropriate to             clients’ needs in a multicultural society. (MHFCF G.2.)
