Course Description

This course emphasizes using research/professional literature, in combination with an understanding of a client to aid in choosing effective therapy.  The course begins with an explanation of evidence-based therapies.  Four specific therapies will be examined at depth: Cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety disorders; interpersonal therapy for depressive disorders, exposure therapy for PTSD, and integrated therapy for co-occurring disorders.  A review of those four therapies will include the history of the theory behind the therapy, an explanation of the components of the therapy, evidence for efficacy, and experiential exposure to the techniques and protocols of the therapy.  Core (CSR, D).  3 hours.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

  1. Students will know theories and models of counseling (core F.5.a.), specifically cognitive behavioral, interpersonal, prolonged exposure therapies and integrated treatment for substance abuse & co-occurring disorders.
  2. Students will know evidence-based counseling strategies and techniques for treatment (core F.5.j; F.5.a. & CMHC C.1.b.)
  3. Students will demonstrate essential interviewing, counseling, and case conceptualization skills (core F.5.g.) and will demonstrate knowledge of the principles, models, and documentation formats of biopsychosocial case conceptualization (CMHC C.1.c.)
  4. Students will demonstrate ability to develop relevant counseling treatment or intervention plans (core F.5.h.) and will know some different principles, models, and documentation formats of treatment plans (CMHC C.1.c)
  5. Students understand the etiology, nomenclature, treatment, referral, and prevention of mental and emotional disorders (CMHC C.2.b.), specifically anxiety, depression, PTSD & substance abuse D/Os with co-occurring disorders.
  6. Students understand the diagnostic process, including differential diagnosis and use of current DSM & ICD classification systems for anxiety, mood disorders, and PTSD (CMHC C.2.d.), specifically for anxiety, depression, PTSD & substance abuse D/Os with co-occurring disorders.
  7. Students will demonstrate ability to develop measurable outcomes for clients. (core F.5.i.)
  8. Students will demonstrate methods of effectively preparing for and conducting initial assessment meetings. (core F.7. b.)
