PY-CL527 FOUNDATIONS OF ADDICTIONS COUNSELING

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

3 hours.  This course will focus on historical and cultural patterns of addictions and addictive behaviors, knowledge and attitude toward chemical abuse, theories of chemical dependency, and recognition and identification of addictions.  Core (CSR, D)

Course Objectives

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the course, students will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of the following learning outcomes:

 Human Growth and Development (2016 CACREP 2.F.3)

  1. theories and etiology of addictions and addictive behaviors

Clinical Mental Health Counseling Foundations (2016 CACREP 5.C.1)

  1. neurobiological and medical foundation and etiology of addiction and co-occurring disorders                                                   

Clinical Mental Health Counseling Contextual Dimensions (2016 CACREP 5.C.2)

  1. potential for substance use disorders to mimic and/or co-occur with a variety of neurological, medical, and psychological disorders

By the end of the course, students will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of the following learning outcomes: 

Objectives not from the 2016 CACREP standards: 

  1. Students will understand the historical perspectives of addictions counseling. 
  1. Students will understand motivational interviewing and other psychotherapeutic approaches and how they are utilized in addictions counseling. 
  1. Students will understand comorbid disorders, group work, pharmacotherapy, 12-step programs, and maintenance and relapse programs. 
  1. Students will understand addictions in family therapy, rehabilitation, and school settings. 
  1. Students will understand issues in addictions counseling that are related to multi-culturalism, ethnic diversity, gender, and gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning populations.
