COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, students will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of the following learning outcomes:

- theories and etiology of addictions and addictive behaviors
Clinical Mental Health Counseling Foundations (2016 CACREP 5.C.1)
- neurobiological and medical foundation and etiology of addiction and co-occurring disorders
Clinical Mental Health Counseling Contextual Dimensions (2016 CACREP 5.C.2)
- potential for substance use disorders to mimic and/or co-occur with a variety of neurological, medical, and psychological disorders
By the end of the course, students will be expected to demonstrate their understanding of the following learning outcomes:

- Students will understand the historical perspectives of addictions counseling.
- Students will understand motivational interviewing and other psychotherapeutic approaches and how they are utilized in addictions counseling.
- Students will understand comorbid disorders, group work, pharmacotherapy, 12-step programs, and maintenance and relapse programs.
- Students will understand addictions in family therapy, rehabilitation, and school settings.
- Students will understand issues in addictions counseling that are related to multi-culturalism, ethnic diversity, gender, and gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning populations.
