Course Overview: At CMU we take special care to make sure that incoming freshmen adjust successfully to university life. Helping students make the crucial transition from high school to college is the major goal of our First Year Program. In addition to summer and fall orientation activities, the academic part of the First Year Program consists of two interlinked orientation classes, CMU101 and CMU102. CMU101 concentrates on study skills and life skills necessary for academic success, familiarization with campus facilities and activities, coverage of the CMU catalog and prospective degree plans, and introduction to the students’ chosen major The second class in the sequence, CMU102, concentrates more exclusively on issues related to the major (if applicable), as well as introducing leadership principles and discipline specific skills associated with a career in the major.

Transition, Familiarize, Acclimate, Honor Transition to college and college level work. Familiarize students with campus facilities and offerings. Acclimate students to Fayette and the CMU communities. Honor our institution and its traditions, history, and future.

This class meets twice a week for 14 weeks. Throughout the semester we will meet as an individual class, with another ABE section, and in larger groups. Refer to the schedule for class meetings. Required Texts and Materials: The Naked Roommate: And 107 Other Issues you Might Run into in College by Harlan Cohen. Additional materials: A collegiate dictionary, a day/date planner of the student’s choosing, the CMU Student Handbook, and the CMU College catalog (which is available online at http://www.centralmethodist.edu/catalog/clas/index.php)

Learning Objectives: Students who successfully complete CMU 101 will: • understand the differences between high-school level and university level academic work and further develop the study skills necessary to make this transition; • be familiar with important student services and their locations, as well as academic and social opportunities on campus; • develop a working understanding of on-line learning resources such as the myCMU system and the Quest/Mobius library system; • understand basic university policies regarding academic honors, sanctions, and academic honesty; • learn about the importance of the CMU mission and creed; • explore issues relating to study, leadership, and career opportunities in the student’s chosen major and minor; • begin a four year degree plan and fully understand the requirements of both the major and the minor.
