The provision of hands-on care is only one aspect of appropriate health care services. Professional providers of health care services are also responsible for providing clients and families accurate and adequate education about their health issues. This course explores the various individual assessments necessary to determine a client’s learning readiness and how to develop and adapt appropriate information to a format that meets the needs of the individual client.

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

1. Define patient education and the key components to evaluation of the teaching.
2. Identify the relationship between patient education and the restraints of HIPPA.
3. Discuss the issues and evaluation of learning readiness in the aspect of patient education.
4. Discuss and identify the importance of documentation of patient education that is completed.
5. Identify cultural and religious implications to patient education and identify resources to combat the difficulties associated with these differences.
6. Define and apply Health Literacy to patient education.
7. Describe the differences in patient education across the life span.
