The student is introduced to the current basic requirements for the recording and appropriate sharing of health information through mostly electronic systems. Included are aspects of the evolving Electronic Medical Record. (Prerequisites HS304 and HS314). 3 credit hours.

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

1. Demonstrate skills in using patient care technologies, information systems, and communication devices that support safe practice.
2. Define and analyze how historical events have determined the definition and scope of practice in health care informatics.
3. Evaluate data from all relevant sources, including technology, to inform the delivery of care.
4. Use theories to analyze, predict, and manage health care informatics in the health care field.
5. Uphold ethical standards related to data security, regulatory requirements, confidentiality, and clients’ right to privacy.
6. Protect patient privacy and confidentiality of patient records and other privileged communications.
7. Define terms associated with the Electronic Health Record, examine applications in the clinical setting and apply concepts to practice.
