Course Description

This course provides a summary of the current legislation governing the provision of health care services, the accountability and responsibilities of health care providers, and the rights of individuals receiving services. Includes, but is not limited to: HIPAA, standards of care, professional Codes of Ethics, Practice Acts, Informed Consent, and the concepts of beneficence, social justice, non-maleficence, altruism, autonomy, human dignity, and integrity in the provision of health care services. 3 hours.

Course Objectives

  • Explain why knowledge of law and ethics is important to health care practitioners
  • Distinguish among law, ethics, bioethics, etiquette, and protocol
  • Define moral values and explain how they relate to law, ethics, and etiquette
  • Discuss the characteristics and skills most likely to lead to a successful career in one of the health care professions.
