The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student with typical medical terminology, how those terms are constructed, and the meaning of pertinent prefixes and suffixes associated with the technical healthcare language.

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

• Recognize word roots and combining forms
• Identify the most common prefixes and suffixes used in medical/healthcare technical language
• Define word building and describe a strategy for translating medical terms into common language
• Define selected abbreviations accepted in medical settings
