Course Special Requirement

Students will be required to be on the Fayette campus for a particular number of days for the lab portion of the course.

 

Course Description

This course reviews the legal underpinnings of the profession of nursing and human developmental concepts. Basic communication skills pertinent to therapeutic communication utilized in healthcare are explored. The nursing process is explained, and the student is introduced to Roy’s Adaptation Model. Lab sessions introduce the student to basic skills required by professional nurses.  Lecture/Discussion/Lab.   This course is a prerequisite to all CLAS nursing courses.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, each participant should be able to:

 

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in basic fundamental nursing skills
  2. Discuss the history of healthcare and how it relates to present healthcare finances.
  3. Identify what evidence-base is and how:
  1. A PICO question can be formed
  2. Research can be found and how to evaluate that research
  3. It relates to practice
  4. It benefits the patient and healthcare system
  1. Discuss ethical/legal behaviors related to the practice of nursing.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the concepts of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice through interactions with clients, families, and health care staff.
  3. State the foundations, philosophy, and terminology of the adaptation nursing model (Roy).
  4. Identify and describe the components of the adaptation nursing process.
  5. Synthesize a body of holistic knowledge about developmental changes across the lifespan
  6. Demonstrate understanding of how APA is used and how it relates to research articles.
  7. Describe & discuss the education programs, roles, and career opportunities for nurses.
  8. Recognize nursing leadership roles in the provision and coordination of healthcare as a direct care provider, teacher, and communicator.
  9. Identify the health care delivery team and appropriate interaction among members in today’s health care system and how it impacts the role of the nurse.
