Course Special Requirements

Students will be required to be in Fayette, MO during a week of the course to complete the Lab Component of the class.

This year these dates are July 31-August 3. We start at 9 a.m. till 4 p.m.

   Location: Thogmorten building, Fayette campus. Simulation Lab is on the first floor.

Course Description

This course reviews the legal underpinnings of the profession of nursing and human development concepts.  Basic communication skills pertinent to therapeutic communication utilized in healthcare are explored.  The nursing process is explained, and the student is introduced to Roy's Adaptation Model.  Lab sessions introduce the student to basic skills required of professional nurses. 

Course Objectives

  1. Demonstrate proficiency in basic fundamental nursing skills
  2. Discuss the history of healthcare and how it relates to present healthcare finances.
  3. Identify what evidence-base is and how:

a.    A PICO question can be formed

b.    Research can be found and how to evaluate that research

c.    It relates to practice

d.    It benefits the patient and healthcare system

  1. Discuss ethical/legal behaviors related to the practice of nursing.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the concepts of altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice through interactions with clients, families, and health care staff. State the foundations, philosophy, and terminology of the adaptation nursing model (Roy).
  3. Identify and describe the components of the adaptation nursing process.
  4. Synthesize a body of holistic knowledge about developmental changes across the lifespan
  5. Demonstrate understanding of how APA is used and how it relates to research articles.
  6. Describe & discuss the education programs, roles, and career opportunities for nurses.
  7. Recognize nursing leadership roles in the provision and coordination of healthcare as a direct care provider, teacher, and communicator.
  8. Identify the health care delivery team and appropriate interaction among members.
