ICE Breaker! - Taylor Barker Original post: Mon 1/18/2021 at 9:03 AM

Hi! My name is Alyssa Taylor Barker. I have gone by my middle name since I was in kindergarten, so forgive me if I accidentally put Taylor instead of Alyssa. I am originally from a very small town in Missouri called Steelville. While it may be a really small town, many people come from miles away to go floating at one of the many canoe rentals during the summer.
I moved to Delta, MO in 2014 to train horses out of my aunt’s barn and go to school at TRC in Dexter. At that time, I was pursuing the Physical therapy program. The next year I completed my one-year certificate and met my, now husband. When I met my husband, I moved to his place in Poplar Bluff, Mo. After moving to Poplar Bluff, I was accepted into the PTA program through State Tech College of MO. I made it through the program all while training horses on the side to make extra money while in school. After I finished the program I decided being a PTA wasn’t really what I wanted to do. I continued to train horses until I could find something that I truly enjoyed and could see myself doing. As I began to explore, I found a job working at a college as an administrative assistant. The college is paying for me to go to school so that I can pursue my degree in business with a banking and finance concentration. My ultimate goal is to work at a bank someday and within that bank, I want to continue to work my way up the ladder.
In our free time, my husband and I both enjoy riding and training horses. My husband enjoys team roping and I enjoy barrel racing. We compete any chance we get.

Taylor, I really respect the hustle of working and going to school. I know how crazy it can be to balance everything at once but I have found that it has shown me that I could work harder and do more than I thought possible. Also going back to school after a tough decision I think is awesome. Knowing and understanding yourself and what you truly want out of life and your career is definitely key, even if some things don't work out. I find that to be admirable. Working in a bank sounds very interesting, even as a front line worker, or going up the ladder I am sure that you will run into a lot of different situations that most people would not run into at their place of work. You and your husband sound like a great team and I am loving the competitive spirit even though I am completely unfamiliar with roping, barrel racing and just the world of horses in general. Hope you have a wonderful semester!

Thank you so much for the kind words! Sometimes I find myself getting down about the fact that I am further behind in life than I had originally seen. Your kind words give me a lot of encouragement. I hope have a great semester as well.

Hello Taylor, it's awesome to hear someone with a work ethic like you. It not easy to figure out what you want to do as a career but when you work hard you can continue to try new things until one sticks. The banking industry has a lot of opportunities for growth and you will definitely succeed with that work ethic. Good luck this semester.
