Ice Breaker! Original post: Mon 1/18/2021 at 5:51 PM

Hello,

I am Michelle Jones and I currently live in Clinton but work as the accounting specialist for MOTUS, INC. in Warrensburg. We collaborate with leading automotive brands to create and produce high-value automotive headliners, consoles, armrests, and trim components. Our main customer is General Motors in Kansas City and in Wentzville.  I have been with the company for 5 1/2 years but only in the finance department for 2 years.  I started as a material purchaser and moved my way into the finance department in hopes that once I finish my accounting degree, I will become the official Cost Accountant.  MOTUS has eight different plants all over the United States.  Currently they offer tuition reimbursement which is an incentive for others including myself to better our education and have more opportunities to move within the company as well as the possibility to transfer to different locations. However, my ultimate goal is become an Accountant in December of 2021 and get the Cost Accountant promotion with MOTUS.  If the Cost Accountant position does not open up more opportunities for me then I would want to work at a firm in my hometown so that I am able to be more involved in my daughter’s high school years.  Traveling out of town daily for work and going to school does not allow me to be able to be at my child’s sporting and academic events as often as I would like.  That is part of bettering our education and working towards the final career step so that in the long run I am where I need to be financially to support my family.

Michelle - I am impressed of your ability to work, go to school, and be a mom all at the same time. I am struggling with just work and school. I have been on this journey for a little over a year and a half and honestly cannot remember what I used to do with my life. I am sure your daughter will look at your absence one day (if not currently) and be inspired to achieve her own goals!

Wow, Thank you so much!  I will be honest and tell you that it is not easy.  I work from home right now due to covid.  My CEO sent all finance home on March 13th and I am not sure when I will be back in my actual office.  That has really helped me get more school work done at home so maybe it was a blessing in disguise.  However, my daughter is a freshman, a volleyball player and in FBLA so she keeps us so busy at night.  I am ready to finish my degree just so I can take a breath and watch her grow into this adult that is going to help change our crazy world.  I hope that she sees the struggle right now and decides to go all in right after high school so that she is not at school when she is 42 like me LOL!!!

Michelle,

I can totally relate to trying to balance work, school, and kids. It sounds like you have are working your way up into your company. I think that is almost indispensable when it comes to employees, especially in accounting. You have such a insight of where the accounting numbers come from and how to really dissect them. Before Covid, I was in your same position working your way up to the controller position in a corporate company. Due to Covid our plant shut down, but I was fortunate enough to find a construction company that was offering the same. I too eventually want to be a controller. Good luck balancing family and work/school life this semester, you can do it!
