Course Description:

This is an online course; This course will discuss the impact of contextual factors (socioeconomic, political, cultural, professional, ecological) on occupational therapy practice. Principals and techniques of management appropriate to the occupational therapy assistant will be covered. Students will identify strategies for conflict resolution regarding ethics in the personal and organizational realms.  Students will also explore skills needed for the effective, ethical supervision of nonprofessional staff within the healthcare setting.  Course discussion will include identification and documentation of quality improvements, understanding of regulatory and legislative systems that impact occupational therapy practice, as well as current policy issues and professional responsibility. Students will explore individual and group leadership issues and be able to identify personal leadership qualities to apply in their lives and practice.

Spring break is not observed during this course so that content is completed before Level 1b fieldwork assignment. 

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

  1. Understand contexts and health care, specifically contexts of legislation, geography, and demographics and how they have an impact on OT practitioners and clients. 
  2. Articulate an understanding how common leadership theories, effective leadership skills, participation in professional advocacy activities and continued involvement leadership & advocacy activities strengthens both the practitioner and the profession.
  3. Identify the positive effects of technology on the field of occupational therapy and impact on leadership & advocacy opportunities.
  4. Articulate how the qualities of leadership and advocacy complements a healthy client-centered practice through the demonstration of unique service delivery, incorporation of evidenced-based practice, and through the promotion & recognition of the importance of the interdisciplinary team. 
  5. Understand the requirements that must be met by OTAs wishing to practice within the United States by becoming familiar with all requirements and legislation that may affect his or her practice.
  6. Understand various reimbursement systems and the importance of documentation in securing payment for OT services.
  7. Understand the responsibility to market and promote their skills and knowledge to entities that control reimbursement dollars and affect legislation for the purpose of advancing the value of the profession as being powerful, widely recognized, science-driven and evidence-based meeting the diverse needs of society's occupational needs.
  8. Demonstrate an understanding of quality improvement and documentation through data collection, review of data, and collaboration.
  9. Demonstrate the ability to work professionally in interdisciplinary teams, intradisciplinary teams and maintain clinical competence within legal guidelines and ethical expectations of the profession.
  10. Articulate the responsibility of each OT practitioner to facilitate fieldwork opportunities to ensure the future success of the profession and to meet societal needs. 
  11. Understand client's health literacy levels, needs and capabilities and how these issues impact environments and interventions.
  12. Demonstrate the skills necessary to identify and address ethical issues in their careers.
  13. Understand the importance of scholarship and scholarly practice for the OTA.
